Assisted Toileting for Falls Prevention: Using Trauma-Informed Care to Improve Adherence

Twenty-six hospitals collaborating with a Patient Safety Organization (PSO) noted an increase in falls related to intervention refusals. Specifically, patients were refusing assisted toileting, citing the need for privacy and autonomy. Nurses struggling with how to balance privacy, autonomy, and safety left fall risk patients alone in the bathroom, which led to increased falls. Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology and principles of trauma-informed care, these hospitals implemented a change that resulted in fewer toileting-related falls due to patient refusals.
