Redefining What’s Possible in Quality
As this year draws to a close and I end my time as President of the Board of NAHQ, I find myself both reflecting on how far we’ve come—and energized by what lies ahead. These past two years have been transformational for NAHQ, not only in what we accomplished, but in how we fundamentally advanced the role of Quality & Safety across healthcare.
Throughout the past two years, NAHQ consistently delivered a clear message to the industry: Quality cannot wait.” Quality is the way forward—central to better outcomes, stronger organizations, and a sustainable healthcare system.
One of the most important shifts we drove was elevating Quality from a siloed responsibility to a shared, enterprise-wide imperative. Too often, Quality has been misunderstood or narrowly defined. NAHQ set out—intentionally and boldly—to change that.
Through research, education, and industry engagement, we demonstrated that Quality improves outcomes, strengthens care coordination, and delivers measurable return on investment. The data is clear: when organizations prioritize competency-based Quality practices, they achieve safer care, stronger performance, and experience bottom-line positive financial impact. Quality is not in the way—it is the way.
Advancing Workforce Readiness and Capability
Another defining focus for NAHQ remains preparing the workforce for what’s next. Healthcare continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace, and Quality professionals must be equipped with modern skills, shared standards, and practical tools that can be applied across settings.
NAHQ’s Healthcare Quality Competency Framework™ continues to serve as the foundation for this work—defining what excellence in Quality & Safety truly requires. Building on that framework, we expanded professional development opportunities through micro-credentials and learning pathways that allow individuals and organizations to strengthen targeted competencies while maintaining alignment to a universal standard.
Yes, this work is about valuable credentials. But it’s also about confidence, consistency, and readiness—ensuring that those responsible for Quality have the capabilities needed to lead change, navigate complexity, and deliver results.
Collaboration That Moves the Industry Forward
These past couple years also underscored the power of partnership. No single organization can advance Quality alone, and NAHQ has been intentional about working alongside those who share our commitment to Quality, patient safety, outcomes, and accountability.
Our strategic alliance with Joint Commission represents a meaningful step forward for the field—bringing together complementary strengths to advance standards, education, and workforce development at scale. These kinds of collaborations matter because they send a clear signal to the industry: alignment around Quality is not optional, and leadership in this space requires shared commitment.
Thought Leadership with Proof
NAHQ has also continued to lead through thought leadership grounded in evidence. The introduction of the ROI-Q™ Report and Workforce Accelerator outcomes made something unmistakably clear: Quality delivers value—and that value can be measured.
Organizations that align people, processes, and competencies don’t just improve care; they reduce harm, strengthen financial performance, and create systems that can sustain improvement over time. Making the case for Quality means pairing vision with proof, and NAHQ is proud to continue providing both.
None of this progress would be possible without the thousands who engage with NAHQ year after year. And I have had the pleasure to be in the company of these heroes over the years. From NAHQ next to Healthcare Quality Week, this community demonstrated once again its passion, expertise, and commitment to making healthcare better for everyone.
As Board President, I am deeply grateful—to our staff, our volunteers, our partners, and to every person who sees Quality not as a role, but as a responsibility we all share.
Looking Ahead
As we approach NAHQ’s 50th anniversary in 2026, the work ahead is both ambitious and essential. The industry needs leadership, clarity, and momentum—and NAHQ is ready to deliver. We will continue advancing Quality as a strategy, preparing the workforce for the future, and proving the value of investing in Quality and Safety.
If my time as President has taught me anything, it’s that when we tap into the Power of Quality, we don’t just improve systems—we improve lives. And that is work worth accelerating.
