Business Intelligence Technology Enables Healthcare Professionals to Improve Healthcare Quality and Safety

In this session, attendees will explore how business intelligence technology improves healthcare quality and patient safety by providing clinicians with the real time data needed to make informed decisions and steer optimal clinical outcomes. Our revolutionary applications and dashboard solution are built on robust data analytics capabilities, allowing healthcare professionals to proactively implement targeted interventions, make informed decisions, identify areas for improvement and promote a culture of continuous quality enhancement.

Tool: Microsoft Power App, Power Bi and Power Automate.

Problem: Most nurse sensitive data for Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) prevention is collected and aggregated through manual and retrospective methods, impeding nurses' ability to optimize patient outcomes through data driven decisions.

Tool Selection: Use of Business Intelligence Technology improves decision-making processes and outperforms experience driven practices for managing processes in healthcare (Basile et al., 2023). We selected Microsoft Power Apps because the software enables users to create custom applications that fulfill a variety of healthcare quality needs.

Usage: Mobile rounding applications were used to assess staff compliance with bundle elements for central line, foley and ventilator care. Data entered in the rounding applications was automated to be aggregated and refreshed in real time on the Bundle Maintenance Compliance dashboards.

Results: Business Intelligence Technology increases nurses' compliance with infection prevention bundle elements of care required to reduce risk of HAIs. Leveraging data-driven insights and user-friendly visualizations provides nurses with the data needed to empower informed patient care decisions, identify areas for improvement, and promote a culture of continuous quality enhancement.
